Has anyone else experienced a situation where they received a letter from the IRS stating that an error on their tax return was corrected, and they were due a refund, but the refund has not been received within the 4 to 6-week timeframe mentioned in the letter? What steps should my nephew take at this point to resolve the issue?

Because the notice that goes out after IRS makes a correction is automated, and doesn't "know" whether there is still a hold on the refund. There could still be a hold by a different department.

If your nephew had to verify in person, he should check his Account transcript to see if there's a hold or refund freeze.

Get IRS Transcript

The codes to look for are 570 (account hold) and/or 810 (refund freeze). They have corresponding release codes of 571 & 811 that need to post before the refund gets released.
