How can I file my taxes in California without providing my estranged parents' names and social security numbers, as required by Free Tax USA, considering I have income from 2 W-2s and a 1099-NEC, and I'm looking for a cost-effective solution, given that I have an extension until October to file?

Do you have a lot of grants to pay for school? It sounds like FreeTaxUSA thinks you are subject to the Kiddie tax because you are a full time student with unearned income. It doesn't matter if you are a dependent or not - this is a common issue for full time college students who get a lot of grant income and don't have much income from work.

Tax on a Child's Investment and Other Unearned Income (Kiddie Tax)

You might not actually be subject to the Kiddie tax, but I can't tell without knowing how much your income is. I think it's likely you have a filing requirement since you have income from a 1099-NEC, but if your earned income from work is more than 1/2 your total living expenses (aka support) for the year that's another exception to the Kiddie tax.

As long as your income is less than $73k you can file for free through one of the IRS Free File guided options, even with a 1099-NEC:

Since you are having issues with FreeTaxUSA, you might want to try TaxSlayer.

You can also probably go through a free tax preparation program for help - they aren't supposed to do returns if you are subject to kiddie tax, but they can help you if you aren't subject to Kiddie tax. You can go through this online option, or see if there's an in-person location by using the VITA location search on this page or search online for free tax help near you.
