I got CP 2000 notice from the IRS saying that I owe 10k from 2021.Is it possible that the information on my IRS.gov account, which shows I owe $0 as of yesterday, could be a scam? Should I contact the IRS directly to confirm this?

This is the IRS notice for unreported income. Look inside - it should tell you what type of income (W-2, 1099-B, 1099-NEC, etc) and who reported it, although the name will be partially redacted.

The notice is a proposed assessment, not a bill.

You have the opportunity to review the information and determine if the IRS position is:

  • 100% correct. You pay the amount in full by the notice due date to avoid any additional interest charges.

  • 100% incorrect. The income was reported accurately on your return, or it's a case of identity theft.

  • Something in the middle. You may have additional tax due, but it's less than the proposed amount.
