My servicer calculated my IDR amount incorrectly. What should I do?
Answered on September 25,2023
First, be sure it IS incorrect by using the loan simulator tool at Federal Student Aid website.
If it's close, it's likely correct.
If it's off, call your servicer and ask for a recalculation.
Here are some of the common reasons for an incorrect payment amount:
-you are married filing jointly and your spouse has loans and you did not provide enough information about the spouse's loans to allow them to adjust the payment between the two of you
-you filed married filing separately so your spouse is no longer being counted in your family size - this is correct in the calculation but the change is causing some folks to think their payment is wrong
-the servicer made a mistake
In all three of these scenarios or any where the payment is incorrect calling is the solution.
